Diversity Scholarships at Web Weekend 2019

Diversity Scholarships at Web Weekend 2019

Back in 2016, The Smashing Conference team offered me a volunteer position at Smashing Conference Freiburg. That experience has helped shape me and Web Weekend in many ways. Roshan* was sponsored to JSConf EU, he later spoke at the conference. Subash* recently volunteered at Running Remote. Similar to our experiences, Sponsored tickets and Volunteered positions have opened doors for many others in this small world of ours. This is us (wwktm team) playing a small part in the big drama called life.

We deeply believe that a diverse lineup of speakers and a diverse (and inclusive) group of attendees is the most important factor to a conference experience. While we have tried our best to keep the conference cost affordable, we recognize that it can still be a barrier to attending.

This year, we are making a number of scholarships available to those who wouldn’t have been able to attend otherwise. Scholarships range from discounted tickets to free tickets. Unfortunately we cannot provide travel assistance at this point of time.

Eligibility

People from underrepresented group in technology are encouraged to apply for diversity ticket. This includes, but is not limited to: people of minority status in their country, indigenous people, people with disabilities, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, non-binary people, students and those facing economic or social hardships. The discretion of selection for diversity ticket solely remains with the organizers of the conference.

Requirements

  1. Must agree to follow our Code of Conduct.
  2. Must attend the whole conference.
  3. Must share the conference experience and learnings after the event

Deadline : 15th August 2019

Huge thanks to Balsamiq, our diversity sponsor to help us in this mission.

How can I Help?

Thank you for asking. There are number of ways you could help us maintain diversity at the conference.

  1. The easiest way is by sharing about the conference and the diversity initiative.
  2. If you are an individual, getting the community ticket will cover part of the cost of a diversity ticket.
  3. If you are an organization, we still have sponsorship slots available, contact us at contact@wwktm.co for more details.

Note: Volunteering requests should be forwarded to volunteer@wwktm.co

* Roshan and Subash are part of the web weekend organizing team.
