Gaurav Sen is our only returning speaker from wwktm2018. He was so good last year, we had to invite him again. He is perhaps as avid a teacher as he is a learner. This year, Gaurav’s talk on Making decisions among tradeoffs in Systems Design will reflect on the intermediate processes and choices that arise when designing a system. Here is a brief about Gaurav.

One adjective to describe you: Insatiable
Editor you would marry: Jetbrains
Favorite OS: Mac OS
Most productive time of the day: The morning, when I decide what to do the rest of the day lol

Tell us one fun fact about you?
I am a Bengali who has never been to Kolkata.
What keeps you going in life?
Chewing gum and intelligent converstations.
What can we expect from you at wwktm2019?
I will be talking about the scenarios we come across when developing distributed systems. We often need to strike a balance between two conflicting goals. The talk will focus on what these tradeoffs are like and how are they made.
Why is the topic relevant today and especially for wwktm2019?
(Dumbledore voice starts) We must choose between what is easy and what is right! On a serious note, it’s good to know about what problems are commonly faced when designing large scale systems. So that when our time comes, we make the right design decisions.
Any background reading you would suggest to those that want to come prepared?
The talk will be friendly to everyone, so no prior reading is required. You could check out the http://highscalability.com/all-time-favorites/ blogs and my channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRPMAqdtSgd0Ipeef7iFsKw/ for advanced system design content.
What is the best and worst thing about your career so far?
The best thing is I still have a job. I can’t think of the worst yet.
What is your advice to people wanting to be where you are in the industry?
Take risks slowly. Give back to the community when you can.
